I love coming to Great Smiles Dental Care because I used to be extremely afraid. I went a couple of times, and I had a real bad experience, so I just gave up until I came here. The moment I walked through the door, it was great. Like talking to the receptionist on the phone when I made my appointment, meeting everybody every step of the way, to get my X-rays, then my cleaning, meeting the doctor. So, it was really good.
Dr. Wendelschafer is amazing. When he talks to you, he talks to you like a person. He doesn't talk down to you. He explains things and he gives you hope because when I came, I had none. I thought it was really, really bad, and he's like, "It's not as bad as you think it is, and everything's doable," and that led to me bring in my daughter. She's a teenager and she's extremely shy, but she loves him and he's really gentle, and I think that's important. I appreciated the way the team here communicated with my daughter. Spoke to her with respect. Always a smile.
Well, she's really wanting to make sure she has a good smile. When we came back and got a chipped tooth fixed, so that really put her over the top. She smiles all the time and then she says, "Can you believe how good my teeth look?" At Great Smiles Dental Care, you can expect to be greeted with a smile and treated with respect and to return because you're going to love it.
I had to have dental surgery a long time ago, like 20 years ago, and I was pregnant and so I couldn't have anesthesia. I had to have my wisdom teeth cracked out because one was abscessed, two of them were abscessing. It was very painful and it hurt. And then, when I moved here, I had a dental emergency, and it didn't turn out good. It was a really bad. Bad reaction to the medication that they used, and then it wasn't done right and the doctor got frustrated, the surgeon. So, it was bad, and I swore off, that was it. I swore dentists off. And then, I noticed I was having some issues, and so I asked a really good friend of mine. She comes here, so she had an appointment, and I asked her if I could come with her and she said absolutely.
So I followed her over here so I knew how to get here. We came in and that's what made me come back. That moment right there. It was more than just being sold. I was comfortable. I saw how everybody interacted, and they interacted with me like that without knowing me. From the time you come in, from the receptionist and whoever you see for whatever issues that you have, it works out really well because everybody knows their job and they communicate very well. It just feels like a family. I literally cooked for them the second time I came. I don't care where you're going, you're missing out if you're not coming here.
Well, when I started coming to the practice, I noticed that as I was beginning to age, the bottom teeth were doing some shifting work. For a certain number of years, I wanted to get that corrected, but with having three kids, you're always putting their dental needs first. So, we took care of them.
Finally it was my turn. Dr. Wendelschafer has been very successful at getting that bottom portion of my mouth straightened out. I had braces on for just under a year, about 10 months, I believe. I just recently got them off as a matter of fact and was very impressed and very pleased with the smile that I have.
I went with the traditional braces. It was a new experience for me. My daughter had gone through it, but until you go through braces for yourself, you really don't know what to anticipate.
But he walked me through the entire process, told me what he was doing every step of the way. I never felt like there were things going on and I was in the dark. He talked me through the entire thing.
They went on. I went through the process, came in for my monthly exams and everything. As I said, recently got them off, and I've been very pleased with the results.
I just thought I looked fantastic. I've been really guarded about my smile for the last few years because of the crowding and crooked or misplaced teeth, if you will. And so when I first got that glance, I thought, “Wow, this is the smile that I remember from maybe 15 years ago or so.” I was very happy about that.

I was born with a crooked jaw, which they straightened a little in the surgery even though it didn't go well. I wore braces as a child. They couldn't do anything to fix it because it was a bone problem, and I told him that I have never been able to eat anything without pain. And I couldn't bite a sandwich, even a tuna sandwich – something … if I did, it just caused terrible pain in my front teeth because they would hit each other. If it was soft, it would go through it too quickly. And if it was hard, it wouldn't bite it at all. So, you know, it wasn't that I just couldn't eat hard things. I couldn't eat anything without pain.
He didn't hurt me at all. He took the tooth out and made a beautiful bridge. He does implants, but my bone is not good enough, strong enough, for an implant. And he was able to know that. I knew it because I had had jaw surgery many years before, and I was told I have a “glass jaw.” Took me a year to get over the fracturing of my lower jaw. But he knew without my telling him. So he began to look and check the bite, and he said we could fix that.
And I knew that he'd been going to seminars and taking some coursework on that kind of thing, and he was interested in it. So I wasn't afraid to say, “Let's do it.” And we did. It's all complete now. And for the first time in my life, I can eat with no pain. I don't sleep with pain, and my joint, my TMJ joint, doesn't hurt. Everything – my muscles have relaxed. I am just the happiest person you'll ever find because I can talk to you, I can move my mouth, now I can eat things without suffering my way through it.
By fixing my bite, it just relaxed the muscles and took the pain out of the TMJ joint. I think that would help a lot of people. They just don't get to the right person to find that out. And after he did the bridge over here, I said, "That feels so much better than my teeth did. I'm not sorry to have that at all," and it was a beautiful bridge. I mean, my teeth were never that pretty. He said, "Well, would you like to go ahead and have us fix your bite?" And I said, "I would love to." The first thing he did, my lower teeth were hitting my upper teeth, causing them to move out and making them sore. So he crowned the front six teeth on the lower. When we got through that, that just felt so much better that there was no hesitation. I just wanted to go right ahead and do them all. Just since he's been working on it, I've had enough time with the temporaries in that all that stress has left those teeth. They don't feel weak anymore.
I could never eat anything as hard as an apple. If I wanted an apple, I had to grate it, and that takes all the fun out of having an apple. The first thing I did was have an apple, and it was really, really nice, but that's what he did with all the teeth. He just lined them up and worked with what he had so that I wasn't hitting in the wrong place on the uppers, making the upper sore and the lower sore. All of that causes muscle spasms that go all the way back to the TMJ joint. By solving each problem one at a time, it solved them all. Night and day difference, because even if you're not trying to eat, your mouth has to sit in a comfortable position, and mine didn’t. And then I would be asked to go out and eat. “We're going to go get pizza, would you like to come?” I'd have to say no. Now I can say yes, and I can go and enjoy making friendships that I couldn't make before because I can go eat pizza. It just makes all the difference in the world.
